Palestinian Girl Shot in Gaza Dies of Her Wounds

10-year-old Ghadir Maheymar, who was seriously wounded Tuesday in Khan Yunis, reportedly by IDF fire, died of her wounds in a hospital in the Gaza Strip Wednesday.

Maheymar was allegedly shot in the chest by soldiers as she sat in her classroom at the UNWRA Al-Khalidiya primary school in southern Gaza. She was taken to the local Nasser Hospital, where doctors described her condition as critical. Palestinian officials submitted a complaint to the District Coordinating Office.

The IDF Spokesman said Tuesday the incident was being investigated but noted that several hours before the incident, Palestinians in Khan Yunis had fired three mortar shells at an IDF post at nearby Neveh Dekalim; soldiers returned fire at the source.

Officials said that around the time Maheymar was shot, soldiers had spotted Palestinians by a mosque – located next to the school – attempting to fire an additional mortar shell. The soldiers fired at them but were unable to identify casualties. Officials did not rule out the possibility that Maheymar was hit by one of the bullets. The officials said that under no circumstances were soldiers targeting the school.
