Fayette County voters approved a $10.9 million property tax hike for LexTran Tuesday, handing the perennially struggling transit authority a rare and surprising victory.

“There were a lot of people who said this could never happen,” Chief Administrative Officer Milton Dahoney told about 80 cheering volunteers in Lexington’s City Hall ballroom. “And there were days when we were wondering if it could happen.

The tax will begin next July and cost 6 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The owner of a $100,000 home will pay $60 annually.

The dedicated tax will replace the $3.4 million subsidy LexTran receives from the Urban County Government and a $2 million federal air quality grant that expires next summer, officials said.
