Now that's progressive urban planning! Other American cities, big and small, should take note...

Millennium Park Bicycle Station more than doubles available parking with high-capacity racks

The new Millennium Park Bicycle Station, which opened to the public on July 16th, features more than 300 secure, indoor bicycle parking spaces. Traditional bike racks would accommodate less than half this number of bicycles, but high-capacity, two-tiered racks allow more than twice as many bicycles to be stored in the same amount of floor space. The Millennium Park Bicycle Station is part of Chicago’s new Millennium Park, a brand-new addition to Grant Park.

The bike station provides users with heated, secure, indoor bicycle parking. The new facility also features lockers, showers, and bicycle maintenance. Parking capacity at the facility is maximized with DoubleParker racks from Josta, a German manufacturer of high-capacity bicycle parking systems and bike stands. Cycle-Safe, Inc. collaborated with the City of Chicago and Josta to coordinate this significant new installation.

The Millennium Park Bicycle Station was constructed to encourage Chicago residents and visitors to bike to work, the park, and nearby attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago. By promoting this alternative method of transportation, city planners hope to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and encourage more people to enjoy the health benefits of cycling.
