Singer Lorrie Church Performs for Youth, Veterans of Blackfeet Country

"Well, I guess it was kind of a private performance," said Native American singer-songwriter Lorrie Church Monday at Blackfeet Tribal Headquarters. The artist was preparing to depart Blackfeet country after a performance for the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council. Blackfeet country having been one of the first stops on her Dreamchaser Tour, Church had performed earlier that day at Browning High School.

"I had the greatest time," said Church. "Browning, Montana, has wonderful students. There's lots of ambition there; they're very goal oriented."

Keith Heavy Runner of the Blackfeet Veterans Office said his group invited the singer to Browning. "It was a really awesome performance," Heavy Runner said of her trip to BHS. "She brought them up so high, and then talked to them about drugs and alcohol."

Church said she relies heavily on audience involvement, and at the high school both students and teachers became part of the show, singing together with Lorrie. "You have to look at the kids as equals," Church said. "You have to have that one-on-one."

Performing for Native American young people is the focus of the Dreamchaser Tour, Church explained. During the course of this year, the artist plans to stage more than 100 free concerts for Indian youth across the country, the result of a vow she took. "I tell them how to achieve their goals without drugs or alcohol, and to be proud of who they are," Church said.

In addition to her commitment to youth, Church also took the opportunity to perform for the Blackfeet veterans Sunday, not only to thank Heavy Runner for the invitation, but also to promote her Native American Veterans project. That project, said Church, will involve making a music video honoring Native American veterans, and she was in Browning in part to invite Blackfeet vets to participate. Church said she hopes to shoot the video this March, and 100 percent of the profits from sales of the video will go towards constructing a national monument honoring Native American veterans.
